Tara the Traveler

As many of you may have seen, on Monday I compiled such a fun post for this blog based on TRAVEL . On my travel and on some other amazing bloggers travels. I linked up with some really awesome people - but only AFTER hitting that convenient pumpkin colored publish button (Halloween is just 22 days away.. but hey, whose counting?) I met Tara

She is just down-right hilarious. I read every single one of her blog entries back to front (per say.... you know, as you can't technically do that in blog world...)

The best part about it all is that her blog is brand-spanking-new(ish). Based on her exciting and thrilling new adventure of quitting her 'soul-crushing' 9-5 job, selling all of her belongings (besides her beloved collection of books... I'm sure most of us can relate!) and skipping off into a tropical, Asian sunset with her man.

Sounds like a dream, right?

Wrong.
Tara will take you through the nitty gritty of it all. The gruesome, gory details that accompany every epic adventure.
It is a dream too, though. She tells stories from her experiences across the globe - the good times and the cringe-worthy bad times that will have you practically beetroot red and on the floor laughing.

Working in a fine art gallery, we get tourists strolling in throughout my own 9-5 working day all the time. Foreigners always have a huge appreciation for art - and after all this natter about travel lately, something happened today that very nearly tipped me over the edge of the mountain of responsibility, commitment, priorities and stability that I've been balancing on.

A group of travellers came trudging through, dragging their worn-out, tethered boots along the gallery's old hard-wood floors.
It's a miserably cold and wet October day in South Africa but even so, they were sporting tiny little white shorts with bronzed legs completely unfazed by the chilly nip in the air.

Their top section seemed to be a bit more cleverly dressed. Over-sized, brightly coloured hoodies. Tatty hair pulled back in careless pony-tails. Rucksacks with just the essentials a backpacker would need, slung across their shoulders.

I stared down at my branded, too-tight jeans. Tugged uncomfortably at my stylish winters coat and patted my slicked back boring hair in envy.

I see tourists wandering in and out all day long - but today it only fuelled my rapidly spreading fire to fly off into my own sunset... to touch new ground, smell new smells, sample new foods. Get completely lost and enjoy absolutely every minute of it.

Travel is Life

Lately I've been on the prowl to discover new and interesting bloggers - I feel the need to read inspiring tales and see the beauty of other peoples worlds captured in the forms of eternal photographs and priceless words.

I've come across some incredible people. I cannot get enough of their worlds and find myself being filled with overwhelming envy yet I feel this is a good thing. It has driven me. Inspired me. Reawakened me while I was on the verge of falling back asleep.
Travel. My life. My love.
That little booklet containing stamps and holding pages upon pages of memories from trekking the globe - it needs to be hauled out again soon.
The stories I have been reading are beyond incredible - from women and men from all over the world, of all different shapes, colors and sizes... people who, like me, are passionate about boarding that airplane and experiencing all that the world has to offer.

There's one substantial difference though.
These people that I have recently stumbled across all did something amazing.

They quit their jobs, sold their worldly possessions, booked a one-way ticket and packed their bags.
(Probably not all of which in that order).
Some have never returned since.

The magical thing about many of these blogs above and beyond the incredible stories of their journeys, is that they want to help you achieve it too.
They offer advice and tips. Helpful, quirky know-hows. Budget plans. Must-see stops...
And so much more.

Please check their world-class blogs out below, but be warned: If you click on the links below and haven't been bitten by the travel bug yet..... then you're about to be:

I very nearly had the pleasure of meeting this 'fella the other day after sending out a bunch of random emails to strangers I found off google while trying to find a job in Bali.
My plan was to go there for roughly 6 months and work while spending just as much time playing in the sun and surf.
This guy responded to my email pretty quickly, letting me know that he was actually in South Africa on a surfing trip as he typed and he would be passing through Knysna too! What a coincidence!! Unfortunately, things didn't work out and we missed each other - but we've kept in touch and will definitely be crossing paths (or waves) in Bali in the near future.

The other blogs you can link to below are all ones I found from Chris actually - and I'm so glad that I did! They're all just incredible:

"In 2010 I LEFT England to PURSUE a life of work and TRAVEL on the other side of the world, starting in Australia and then moving to New Zealand. Today I balance life in London as a freelance writer and online marketing consultant with my love of travel. Follow my journey as I explore the world without living out of a suitcase."

"In February 2012 I sold all of my belongings and took a one way FLIGHT TO Costa Rica. I haven't stopped traveling since. Join me, Camille Willemain, in my adventures discovering peace, balance, and bliss across the world."

"I'm done with the office. It's time to explore the places I've always fantasised about by making my money last as long as possible. Stick with me and I'll show you how they do festivals, holidays, breakfasts, wine o'clocks and life around the world..."

Personally, I related a lot with:

If you read the below excerpt from her blog you'll understand why:

"I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten named Bacon.

Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.”

So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and have been traveling the world ever since."

Like she was, I am currently in my 20's - torn by which way to go.
Travel will always be a major part of who I am. Already I have been to:

Zanzibar:

Amsterdam:

Berlin:

Munich:

Prague:

Venice:

Rome:

Florence:

Pisa:

Monaco:

The French Riviera:

Paris:

Switzerland:

Singapore:

Thailand:

To name only a few places on my far from complete list.

A big part of me dreams to do what the aforementioned travel bloggers have done.
Just quit.
Book a ticket.
Leave.
It's something I've dreamed about for years.

But right now - I'm not in the position to do so.
It's not about the money. I have more than enough saved up after years of blood, sweat and tears. I have worked ever since I finished school. I never had a gap year - never had a break - and MAN do I yearn for one.

The travels I have already done were all during leave from work - I always had obligations and something to come back to.

I can't even imagine what it feels like to leave and be completely, soulfully free. To be totally untied. Wow.

I have a job I adore (how lucky am I to be able to say that!?)

Two cats and a dog that are quite literally my fur-ball kids:

A (crazy) family that I love spending time with:

A partner-in-crime that granted I'm still getting to know but whom I am already falling deeply, deeply in love with.

He has a full-time job too that he can't leave, his own company that he runs with his dad.

We have, however, decided to book our tickets for a fun-filled, surfing holiday in Bali for next year.

I can hardly wait! My surfing needs some serious improving till then - it's been far too long since I took surfing (something that used to nearly mean as much to me as travel and writing does,) seriously.

Before Bali, there has been talk about a little getaway to gorgeous Mozambique for Sam's 30th.

Vamizi Island - Mozambique

So that's already two little travel plans we are setting into motion.

I wish that I could tell you more.
I wish I could tell you a great tale about selling all of my worldly belongings, barring the clothes on my back. I wish I could tell you I spent the money on some old beat up camper van and that for the next year I'd be traveling through Africa.... teaching the underprivileged to read and write, teaching them English and how to grow their owns crops... learning from them too and their humbly, simplistic lifestyle compared to ours.

Lately, I've been pretty bored with blogging.. if I'm honest. I want to give my blog some 'va-va-voom.'
I want to build something, change something.. make a difference in the world. I want to inspire people. Help people. I want this blog to be meaningful. Something that you read every word of, not just skim over a few photographs and leave a small comment. I want to leave a mark on the world - on you... not just write the occasional recipe post that you may or may not try out. Write about a recent book I read that you may or may not read. I want to share with you the joys and hardships of travel - of life. Of a life. A life of one little girl... because that's what I am. But, I am far from ordinary. I have ambitions and goals bigger than life itself... and one day, hopefully soon, I will start writing about them on this here blog.

Thursday's Trio of Blessings

This is yet another post I lost touch with a couple of months back. Seems I am swinging back into a few old, enjoyable habits lately.

I was supposed to publish this yesterday.. you know, being Thursday and all... but I stupidly left my MacBook Pro at work. Damnit.

Blessing One:

I had a look outside at my herb garden yesterday morning after losing ALL of my chili plants to the torrential downpour of rain recently.... and  ONE little plant seems to have survived which I will be tending to with every ounce of love I have in me now to ensure it makes it.

Lesson learnt: Make sure you pot your seeds properly. I didn't have any holes in my pots so the poor baby chili plants all drowned. Whoops.

Trial and error.

To help me and my budding green fingers out - my handsome bearded fellow has offered to make me this:

How unbelievably cute is that?!

Of course I can't let him have all the fun... I can't wait to get my hands dirty and do some home DIY with him.

Blessing Two:

"To write, you must read."

I wrote some absolutely amazing pages for my second novel, The Other Woman.

I find that it really helps both my motivation to write and my writing when I read novels. It gets me excited for other people to hold my book in their hands, the way that I am holding someone else's work in mine.
It is such a deep and personal part of someone and takes so much to let your words grow their own wings and fly.

I cannot begin to express how wonderful it is to have so much inspiration to put pen to paper these days. The saddening part is that I hardly ever have the time to do so... sometimes (okay no, all of the time,) I wish I could just jet off to a beautiful tropical island, shack up in a quaint beach bungalow and pour my heart out onto my typewriter for an uncountable number of months; that would be a dream come true for me...

But I squeeze my creative juices out when I can... and when I do; it puts me on cloud 9...
...and that is exactly where I am today...

Blessing Three:

Lastly, after hearing all these bloody CrossFit stories and realizing that I am developing a wee bit of a 'pouch' around my tummy... I have kicked myself into gear and went for a run yesterday evening.

To motivate myself, I packed my gym clothes (or what I like to pass off as 'gym clothes,') in my car and banned myself from heading home until I successfully shoved on my trainers and went for a run.
Furthermore, I then completed 50 sit-ups back home . . . after that, I declared it Wine O-Clock, quickly seared a steak, mashed up some potatoes, drizzled some balsamic reduction on my plate and topped everything with a handful of rocket. After a delicious meal... I got merry on a bottle of Chardonnay while uncannily relating a little too much with the likes of Bridget Jones.

Oh yes, regarding my exercise:
I've never weighed as much as I do now and I don't like it. I'm by no means big - but my aim is to get back to being fit and healthy, toned and develop some muscle.
Puny? Me?
Never.

Haley over at:

ALWAYS inspires me to get my butt into action and break out a sweat.
Check out her awesome blog for loads of entertaining life stories from a young mum, a doting wife, a fitness enthusiast (for the most part) and just an overall freaking awesome person.

I hope you all had a stunning Thursday bloggeroonies - I'll catch up with ya'll soon.

September Favorites

I haven't done one of these posts in ages - but I thought as this September is more than marginally special, I'd swing back into an old habit.

September Socials:

I didn't really realize it until creating this post but September was an extremely sociable month for me!

I got to see my best mate in the world, Lucien.. A LOT. It's a wonder we aren't completely sick of each other by now.

I also made a new girl friend... Sandy.
She's such fun and it is blossoming into a lovely little friendship which I'm thrilled about as I don't have many girl friends left in my little town anymore.
I'm at this horribly awkward age where everyone either abandons this tiny town to go off and obtain a degree or otherwise sets foot on different land and gets the travel bug!
I'm not really sure why I've stuck around as long as I have... but I am pretty content right now doing my online degree in journalism, working my little tush off to save enough up to get to Bali and surf there next year and just spending some quality time with family and friends.
'Aint a bad life, I must admit.

Speaking of quality time with family.... there's been lots of that with my adorable 9 month old nephew, Jenson. He's growing so quickly it's frightening - I cannot believe it is nearly his 1st birthday... it seems like just yesterday he came into this world.

India:

I got lots of snuggles from my beautiful cat, India while on my three week holiday from work. She is quite possibly the best snuggle buddy in the world.

Addo Elephant National Park:

My family and I managed to escape for a few days and head out into the wild on some game drives. It was so nice to get away from the inevitable routine you build around yourself.

Port Elizabeth:

The weekend after Addo, I went on a little excursion with my three best guy friends: Lucien (as seen above,) Ashley and Louis.

It was a mad weekend and I doubt I have ever felt more hungover than I did on that Sunday morning.

Music:

I picked up the guitar again and have been played it Like. A. Boss.

I got my hands on my friend Justin Serrao's second album which was released recently.
I am seeing him live next month and cannot wait!

My Favorite Recipe:

I have always been the biggest curry fan - so when I had the chance to learn how to make Chicken Tikka Masala I was so excited!

Unfortunately I didn't have all of the correct ingredients so I made the curry with a bit of a unique, 'Jade' twist.

There will be a Jade's Chicken Tikka Masala 'With-a-Twist' Recipe coming soon.

Birthday's:

As with any birthday... when my manager turned another year younger we celebrated it the good old fashioned way at work with a bottle of bubbly and lots of laughter.

The Dreaded Flu:

Why is this a favorite you might ask???

Sam:

I am now officially a girlfriend to the most incredible man on the planet.. Yip.. that's right. On the 17th September, this handsome bearded fellow asked me to be his girlfriend.... and while I was practically dying from the flu, he was shoving vitamins and meds down my throat, giving me back tickles and head massages and just being an absolute gem.

Once I was recovered however, we wasted no time in devouring three and a half bottles of wine, an entire season of The Walking Dead and battling through a mean ass hangover the following morning with the help of some double bloody mary's.

Creativity:

It's been a few months since I have hauled out my pliers, beads and gut but I took this as a fabulous opportunity to give my incredible man a little gift.

I made him this bracelet with his three favorite colors: red, blue and green.
I added in the wooden bits as I thought they were very beach-vibey and he's an amazing surfer and beach bum just like me.

I've also been working on my novel, The Other Woman, in which I have just finished the most amazing chapter! I am absolutely loving writing it out and have so much inspiration spilling out of me lately... I wonder why! Hehe

Lastly I've been dabbling in a bit of painting again too. Granted this piece has taken me freaking YEARS but I'm enjoying it when I do occasionally pick up a make-up brush (because I don't own any actual painting brushes.... nor can I afford them....) and put some paint to canvas:

Giggles:

Sam and I had lunch with his family this weekend and I decided to make them all a trifle.
On the way to their house the trifle cream just kept thickening as we drove over every speedbump - until we ........ had a fight with the trifle.
The trifle won.

September was such an incredible month for me - and I have no doubt that it is only going to get better as the year continues to fly by.

I am beyond blissed out and ecstatically happy.... and we are also booking our tickets to Bali soon for our holiday next year.
Then these two surfing beach bums will be playing in the waves across the globe.

I cannot wait.
