Nostalgia

I got a message from my ex last night. It read, 'Do you know we would have been together for two years today exactly?"
When I read those words, I was in complete shock. I hadn't been thinking about dates and times; or even the past for that matter - so when I replied back that no, I actually didn't know it would have been our anniversary today, he was quite hurt.

It got me thinking about the last two years. How life has changed. Where I was then to how I am now.

I went over to a good friend of mine, Gareth, last night. I'd offered him a helping hand with unpacking boxes from his move and also came baring wine and chinese takeouts.
We managed to unpack all of one box - all kitchenware goodies that we unravelled from newspaper and set up in their allocated cabinets and cupboards.
We then retired to his hideously pink sofa, (not his bad taste, more the owner of the log cabin! I have told him that I'll buy him throws as a house warming gift!) and played a rather frustrating game of Scrabble.
As we are both wordsmiths and obvious old souls - the competition was on! We got a little silly and added words that no one else would have let us get away with but we had some fun nonetheless and I kicked his ass - as I knew I would! (Hehe...)

Gareth gave me some really wise words that I left the cabin with last  night.
He said that every soul that connects are there in that specific moment to teach you or show you something. Every person is a messenger. Every person is a guide sent from beyond.

No matter what happens with the person who enters your life at that point in time, they enter it for a specific reason. Whether it be good or bad.
He also suggested that no matter what happens to you - it is you that lets that happen to you. Good or bad.
All the elements come into play and give you the lesson you are needing in that moment and somehow, even if it is something you do not enjoy, something bad, you made that happen.
It made complete and utter sense to me.
I may never know why certain people entered my world. I may never understand some of those defining moments in my life that broke me apart as a person and tested my soul at every limit. But I don't think I need to.

Two years ago, in March 2011, I was a broke, skinny waitress after having quit my job as a personal trainer at Curves. After having my heart severely broken, I finally found Shaun. At first, we were the couple that everyone admired. Every person we came across would tell us they dream of having a relationship like ours one day.
I lost a few friends from pursuing Shaun - but I was 100% confident that he was someone special that I couldn't ignore.
Once people started to realize that this wasn't just a three-week fling, people simmered down and let us be.
I quit smoking - which was hard and even earlier this year I'd still have the occasional puff when I went out to a pub, (now though, not one scrap of me cares for a ciggie...).
Shaun confessed that he loved me nearing the end of May 2011 - and the story behind that confession is absolutely hilarious. I don't think I will ever live down my reaction:

I finished my first novel and finally started the editing process, which was completed in early 2013. Walk With Me took all of my motivation and dedication but I was so proud of myself.

I got a tattoo in 2011 of an African symbol called, 'Sankofa.' It means learning from the past.
This tattoo meant the world to me and I remember not telling anyone that I was getting it done, coming to visit Shaun with a big surprise on the back of my neck!!
I've always been a spur-of-the-moment, free-spirit.

My surfing slowly started to diminish - but on the rare occasion that Michael did take me out, I saw the improvement each time. There was no happier moment for me that riding a wave - no matter how silly and goofy I looked.

I then invested my time in a make-up artistry course after my time was free from writing my novel. After a few months, I qualified with distinctions.

After having an extremely bad accident in my beautiful Honda Jazz.. I finally got a new car, a little blue Nissan Micra equipped with roof-racks! I named her Blue Crush.

Entering 2012, this became my year of complete spiritual awakening.

"Nobody wants to read a morbid blog so instead, I am going to use my sadness of now to fight for happiness," - that was one of my favorite snippets of writing I did in January 2012.

I started to work at Pezula Spa & Gym after half a year at an advertising agency where I made best friends with the office fax machine.
This is when Shaun and I started to change. Where things got rocky.
I remember our first breakup like it was yesterday. It was the 15th January and I felt so completely betrayed that I ended things and truly thought that it was over.

When blogging on our breakup this is what I had wrote, "Shaun became a huge piece of me, probably the largest piece of me actually.
I’m sure sooner or later I will forgive him for his mistakes and we can move forward slowly, one step at a time. But as for now I still need to give the wound time to scab over. "

Shaun and I rekindled our relationship just before Valentines Day, what a lovely convenience....... *insert sarcasm here*
We went camping at The Old Drift where I was more than happy to boil my whistle kettle and dance around a fire. Rose petals were scattered along the sand like red polka dots and he really did his best to make the evening perfect.

I lost my best friend in March of 2012. This is where things got bad again for a while, until I decided to take it out from pen to paper.

Writing, real writing, should leave a small sweet bruise somewhere on the writer ... and on the reader.

Losing him, hardened me. I no longer cared about acceptance from others. I finally woke up and realized that not everyone is going to get on with you and you can either spend your whole life fretting over why you aren't good enough, or you can focus on the people that think you are good enough and appreciate them for all that it is worth.
That is exactly what I did - and I have never looked back.

Entering my twenty-first year of life, I went blonde. Some would say mentally and physically...
They didn't understand that I was in a major process of transforming. I was moving into my first house with Shaun - which eventually flooded and we had to move.
We adopted two beautiful cats together and one incredible white wolf.

After livin together for a while, I realized that Shaun & I were not going to be together forever and as much as I tried to salvage us, I was really just watching our relationship fall apart around me.
We had no time to miss each other. I cannot tell you why we finally let go... why it didn't work. Some things are too personal to type to the world, but a lot of factors came into play and I knew it was for the best to bring it to the end before it destroyed both of our souls.

Fragile, alone and scared... this is when I found God.
The story of this is spine-chilling and I'm not shy to talk about it.
I don't agree with shoving Christianity down people's throats or preaching... that is not me. I don't go to Church or read the bible... but the new found friendship and understanding I have is my little sanctuary.
The story of how I experienced God in my life can be found below... it isn't like he came up to me and started chatting to me! It was different.. a feeling, a moment...

Entering 2013... I finally left the cottage that I lived in with Shaun. I moved back in with my folks, finally realizing that it really was truly done. That first step forwards to closing one chapter and beginning another is possibly one of the hardest things imaginable... but somehow I did it.

Now, three months down the line... a lot of the anger and pain I feel has mellowed and I remember the good times.
I know we will never be together again - but my hopes are that at some stage, we can put the past behind us and give each other a smile. To be able to ask how we are and catch up. Nothing overly serious... we'll never have the friendship we had before and I know that, I don't want that anymore. But beneath our faults, we are good people and to be able to just say, 'Hey, you look well,' and smile... that's a dream I know is tangible.

I don't think you ever think you'll move back home to your folks once you've lived alone... and it is hard to adapt back into their lifestyle.
With my dad's illness it also makes things hard and complicated but I must say that lately, I have been feeling more like me than ever before.
I blog often, read, write, laugh, sing, relax, cook . . I'm about to go and backpack my way through Europe, a life changing event that I am ready for.

I am maturing. I am growing up. I have learned many, many lessons over the past two years and Shaun was one of the biggest messengers in my life. Now it is time to travel, to go across the globe and spread my sub-conscious messages to people I'll meet along the way; and embrace messages that they will teach me.... good or bad.

I am ready.

My arms are open.

Safe Haven - Book Review

Yesterday I finished Safe Haven; the first Nicholas Sparks novel I have ever read.

I bought the book a week ago, thinking it would last me until the flight over to London but it turns out that I could not put the book down!

Nicholas Sparks is absolutely fantastic - I've always known that he was a great story-teller, (I'd seen The Notebook and A Walk To Remember,) but although I am a complete bookworm at heart, I'd never taken the time to kick back and relax with anything more than the films based on his novels.

When I heard that yet another one of his books was being released as a film I jumped at the chance to read it first, before it comes out in South Africa... and I am so glad that I did!

Without giving away too much, the story is about Katie Feldman, a woman who runs away from someone dangerous from her past and about her trials of starting over and finally discovering independence.

I think the reason I found this novel so endearing was because it was based on a woman starting over. A woman who discovers what it was like to be alone for the first time; how she overcomes her fears and finally understands that she doesn't need people in her life that continuously put her down and hurt her, no matter how much she loves them.

This book isn't just your regular romance either - like most of Nicholas Sparks stories, there are twists and turns that make it impossible to put down or pause, (if you're more of a film watcher...). This book has suspence, thrill, romance, drama... it is a little bit of everything perfectly brewed together into a cup of delicious literature.

I haven't been reading as much as I'd like to - but after the first page of Safe Haven, my love for books came spiralling right back and in literally one week I devoured every page.
Safe Haven is the Creme Brulee on the menu of treats. After unwillingly reaching the last page, I thrust it into my mother's hands and forced her to read it too. I'd suggest it to anyone, as I think all woman would find it a fabulous story and pick up different things from it.

There's no denying that it was pretty delightful to imagine Alex, the lead male character, as Josh Duhamel... Knowing who will play the characters is really something I enjoyed - as now I'll be able to watch the movie and see how different I imagined them portraying their characters or how accurate I was!

One last tiny thing... there is quite a nail-biting, spine chilling twist at the end that I did NOT see coming at all!!!

F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C!

I did a sneaky and watched the trailer for Safe Haven on YouTube... oh lordy. I cannot wait!

Have you read Safe Haven yet? If so - what are your thoughts? If not, tell me if this was enough to tempt you! :)

I'm about to start a new book called 'Never Let Me Go,' by Susan Lewis. Anyone read that?

Happy Reading, lovely blogger friends'!

Kicking off March

To kick off the month of March, the Island I stay on hosted this beautiful Sun Downers' Music Festival.
It was such a gorgeous day and I heard that about 700 people attended, which for our little Island, is a huge amount!
I, unfortunately, did not get to go to the festival as I had to work and also head out of town for the evening - but from seeing the mass amount of cars as I drove past, I knew that it was going to be a great success.

When I returned home late that evening my folks, who I have recently moved back in with, urged me to pour myself a glass of wine, (how could I have said no?) and come sit with them while listening to the live band that I'd missed from the festival.
The pair of them could not stop raving about how fantastic the show had been and I had to admit that the music was beautiful.
They are a Cape Town based band called Blacksmith and they honestly blew me away. From the patio I could hear banjos, bass, violin, harmonica's and the most divine set of vocal chords I think I have ever had the privilege of hearing live.
It just so happens that they had booked accommodation at the African Breeze Guest House - my neighbours.
Coincidence? I think not!
I think my parents were living in the days of their youth because after toying with the idea of gate crashing their party for literally all of two seconds, (I mean come on, this amazing live band playing right next door to us?! What would you have done?!) and topping up our drinks, we all walked over to our new neighbours who we had yet to meet and my father gave me my first 'How To Gate-Crash A House Party' lesson 101!!
It was absolutely hilarious - a proper bonding moment with him. I haven't laughed and smiled that much with either of them in so long, it was a lovely feeling to reconnect. Things have been so difficult lately with his illness. Life has not been easy. My break-up plays a large part in the chaotic mess too and as the house is still a clutter of boxes.. it is less than ideal. Last night however, we all just let our guard down and had such a fantastic, easy evening.
Turns out our new neighbour is an Aussie lady that I used to personal train in the gym and after literally letting ourselves into their house, she couldn't have been merrier!
The band played the most incredible Irish / Folk songs for a handful of lucky listeners' and I was surprised by how many people were in the band.
Ranging from literally 20 years old all the way up to 60+ these are a group of seven people that are quite honestly breath-taking.
Folk music has become a wonderful pleasure for me since discovering Mumford and Sons but this band was even better!

Bedroom Interiors

I am a visual person. Interior and design has always been something that interests me. Below are some of the fantastic bedroom ideas I stumbled across on Pintrest while searching for inspiration.

I really can imagine my two cats, India and Guru, in this little sleeping arrangement!! Too cute...

I have recently moved into a new house after splitting with my ex and moving out of the cottage we'd got together.
I can hardly wait to start decorating my bedroom! Although, I guess in that case I really need to stop procrastinating against unpacking the build-up of boxes then....

My taste is so mixed... I love big, white, open and clean. I love dark, cluttered and bohemian. An artists paradise. I love colors. I love plain. I have absolutely no idea HOW I am going to choose... I think I'll be one of those people who redecorates once a year or so... I get bored far too easily.

Like what I found on Pintrest??

February Favorites

My Favorite Sunset:

When I am on a late shift at work, I finish at around 19h30 in the evenings. South African sunsets can be absolutely breathtaking - as can sunrises. This was one of the many sunsets I was blessed enough to watch this month from the top of the mountain where my work is situated.

My Favorite Rainbow:
This rainbow came after a good three days of solid, much needed rain. It hung perfectly over the townships almost majestically. When I looked at it I truly thought I could find the pot of gold at the end, it was that big and close. The photograph just doesn't do it justice.

My Favorite Laugh:

One of my dearest friends, Kyle, has a very similar, silly sense of humor as I do. We are constantly in fits of giggles and right now our latest thing is going, 'Nom nom nom' whenever we go out for food or even talk about it. I found this photo and when I shared it with him we couldn't stop laughing. Having inside jokes is always fun - ours are just tipping the iceberg of delightful weirdness!

My Favorite News:

My plane ticket to London and my Contiki tour has been booked!!!! I had applied for leave at work and had been anxiously waiting for a full week to see if my 5 week leave was approved... on the 16th Feb I worked up the courage to ask management who smiled at me and asked, 'Do I even have a choice?' in the nicest possible way! So when I get back from my endeavors at least I know I still have a secure, fantastic job awaiting me!

My Favorite Valentines:

One day late... but I arrived home from a drink at a local bar to find one of my gorgeous girls snuggled into a basket by my front door. Although Valentine's Day had passed 24 hours earlier - Guru tried her best to make herself my Valentine's gift and my heart just swelled with adoration and overwhelming love for my furry companion.

My Favorite Wedding Dress?!?:

Not what it looks like!!! Well - I guess it is. That's me in a wedding dress. Who would have thought? Not too shabby... but seriously, not what it looks like. I did a bridal photoshoot for a local company called Besters Bridal Boutique and from all of the dresses I tried on, this one was my favorite.

My Favorite Oufit:

As my travel plans have finally been set into place, I've been starting to realize that I need to do a lot of saving over the next month and a bit before I arrive in London! I honestly don't know how I am going to afford it all.... half way through the month however, I was quite literally going insane. I hadn't been out at all. I hadn't worn something pretty or seen friends, I'd been a bit of a hermit if you will... that's when I decided to head out to a local bar and watch a live band and treat myself to a few beers. A few beers multiplied and a number of shooters were somehow also added into the equation. The next day I woke up and felt absolutely awful and I realized that I don't even really want to be out and about anymore. So I apologize for the lack of fashion pics to all of you fashion-crazed bloggers who enjoy those sort of posts from me - but until I depart for Europe I fear that they will be very few and far between. All worth it in the end though, right?

My Favorite Inspirational Quotes:

This proves to be a rather perfect quote for my life at this point. Out of all of the lessons I have learned over the past two months, this one is by far the one I am most grateful for finally understanding.

I loved this. 2013 is a year of completely refreshing my life and the five W's is something quick and easy to read that reassures me of what I am doing.

I found this gigantic Ferrero Rocher.... Mind blown.

I got my St. Christopher necklace that I have been looking for for so long. My little travel companion! :)

This looks odd... but it is chicken breast wrapped in bacon with melted cheese on top. Heaven.

I ran out of food at home, so I improvised with whatever I could salvage from my fridge. This turned out absolutely delcious!! It is literally onion, garlic, x 2 chili's (because I like it hot....) stripped ham and green pepper with salt and pepper to season. Amazing what you can make with so little and it really was divine.

My favorite marinade - blueberries and thyme. Mmm. I made this for my folks as well as my friend, Brendon, who came to stay for two nights.

Enjoying a glass of wine with my brother and sister-in-law after a lovely swim in the lagoon. My brother very bluntly told me that I have dread-locks... and so my sister-in-law spent about half an hour trying to help me comb out extremely painful knots... my consequence of not looking after my hair for a while. Ooops. It is fixed now - just to clarify things!!!

Kyle and I have an ever-growing friendship. He's been so wonderful to me through my tough time lately... from things with my breakup to home life with my dad and his illness. Kyle's always there to help. This day we took his boat out for a spin! It was amazing! I'd never been so close to going out of the Knysna Heads.. we literally saw the Paquita wreckage under the ocean, it was that clear!

Went out to Firefly and has loads of lovely cocktails with friends. Firefly is such a creative, funky chai bar with the most delicious curries imaginable.
And lastly... I started to read my very first Nicholas Sparks novel, 'Safe Haven.' I saw a review of it on someone else's blog and really wanted to read it before seeing the film. I have not been able to put it down! Cannot wait to see the film either... it is very nice to be able to envision Alex's character as the sexy, 'Josh Duhamel' ... who I've always had a bit of a thing for. The book also proves to be of great relevance in my life right now as it is about a woman who starts life over - which is exactly what I am doing right now. I don't want to give too much of the book away though - so trust me, just read it!
What did all of you get up to over the month of Feb? Please leave your monthly favorites below and I'll be sure to take a look!

Hope everyone has a fantastic month in March - happy birthday to all of you Pisces and Aries starsigns out there!

Signing out.
